Lex Gordon

About me

Well, I suppose I should try and talk about myself here, which is never easy for me to do without sounding like a robot or a dictionary. I'm Lex and my name is not short for anything. Yes, it's just like the super-villain from Superman. I've heard it all since elementary school, but I'm always open to a new quip about my name.

As far back as I can remember, I have always had a passion for art. When I could first hold a pencil, I was drawing not entirely good renderings of Dragon Ball-Z characters that everyone said were amazing. Since I was only a kid, I suppose they were right ... but we are our own worst critics, aren't we? As I moved on from high school to college, my love and passion for fine art grew immensely. I took about every art class Joliet Junior College offered. I'm glad I did and have no regrets because it helped me grow as an artist. One of my former JJC teachers is one of the most talented teachers and artists I know. He opened my eyes to fine art, taught me to think deeply about art and how to create something out of nothing.

It never occurred to me that I would end up being so passionate about photography. My interest was piqued after taking a few Photoshop classes. I started messing with cameras so I would have original images to work with. From there I took film photography and I fell in love with the art of producing images. The film courses gave me the fundamentals to eventually pick up a DSLR and start shooting. I only recently got my own camera, so back then I would borrow cameras from whoever would let me. Now that I have my own gear I can't believe anyone trusted me that much with theirs.

I have gradually started to pick up on what I like and what I want to shoot, that being emotion and mood. I am not so concerned about capturing the technically precise image, but the best felt image - an image that produces something in the viewer and tells a story. I am grateful to be able to use my camera to tell the stories of others. Whether it's a portrait session, engagement, or an event, there is always a story to tell and mood that goes with it. I want to be there to capture it.
